Greymouth & West Coast
The TranzAlpine's western terminus is the launch-pad for exploring the incredible landscapes and industrial history of the West Coast.
Staying in Greymouth
Staying overnight in Greymouth is a great way to transform your TranzAlpine journey into an amazing short break. From Greymouth you can hire a car for a day or two and explore the West Coast or take one of the many tours offered by Greymouth's i-Site (see below).
By staying overnight, you also have a good chance of a change of weather for the return journey. Low cloud between Otira and Greymouth is eerily beautiful, while sunny weather is spectacular - so it's nice to experience both. In winter, you also double your chances of a snow shower, which transforms the journey into a fairytale ride.
Exploring the West Coast
Make the most of your West Coast experience by booking one of these special tours organised by the Greymouth i-Site.
Please note: These trips are only available when you book a TranzAlpine train journey. You'll need your TranzAlpine booking reference on hand when booking your tour.
