Journeys through New Zealand's scenic heartland

One of the best ways to really see New Zealand’s ever-changing landscapes unfold and explore some of this country’s special places, unique attractions and outdoor activities is by including the train in your trip. KiwiRail's scenic journeys take you through lush farmland and forests, over historic feats of railway engineering, past active volcanoes and alpine tussock land, across wild gorges and broad rivers, beside the dramatic seascapes and soaring mountains. You can use different fare options to stop off along the way and take a little more time discovering what heartland New Zealand is all about.

The Overlander, Coastal Pacific and TranzAlpine each offer unique travel experiences and itinerary options for individual travellers, families and small groups. Each journey begins and ends at convenient locations for onward travel. For added savings and flexibility, three kinds of Scenic Rail Passes are also available, including options for travel between the North Island and South Island by Interislander ferry.
